The Story...

Once upon a time, a group of children from the village were lured into the forest by Douens and got lost.  They stopped to rest by a "silk cotton " tree (the home of the folklore spirits).  The frightened children begged the spirits for mercy and said they wanted to go home.

Papa Bois and his wife Mama D'lo agreed to help,  only if the children can prove they are good boys and girls and are doing their part to protect the environment.

To do this, they had to correctly answer questions that the helpful spirit asked them.  However, the Douens, Soucouyant and La Diablesse wanted to keep the children trapped in the woods and did anything to prevent them from reaching the village.

The name

The name Clear d' Way is a local Trinidad and Tobago  slang which means "get out of the way" or  "clear the pathway".  The name is synonymous with the game as it also means being clean and free from encumbrances or obstruction as a clear path will have no trees or any other obstacles blocking it.

What is it?

Clear d' Way is an Environmental Board Game based on the Folklore of Trinidad and Tobago. Two to Four players compete to reach the village.  To get there, the player rolls the die and answers questions. Be sure to know the answer!  However, as you advance on the path, be careful not to tread on the Spirit Squares or else the outcome might be good or bad. If you pull the immunity card, you are saved! Hurry up before the Douens keep you in the forest or else you are doomed.

Who's it for?

Clear d' Way was originally designed to captivate children between the ages of 6-11 years, however, during the experimental game play, it was discovered that adults also enjoyed playing the game. Therefore the audience ranges from 6 years and up.

Why design clear d' way?

With respect to the creation of environmental awareness, environmental issues affect everyone regardless of age, race, status in life etc. In recent times, my home town Maraval, Trinidad, has been plagued by bush fires, flooding, noise pollution and the negative effects of same.

Additionally, Trinidad and Tobago is home to a variety of endangered species, both plants and animals whose habitats are negatively affected by deforestation, hunting, pollution and littering. These problems do not only affect specific areas but are felt throughout the length and breadth of the country.

In this regard, it was envisioned that some interactive medium be used to promote the environmental awareness among young children, while developing other skills such as reading, socializing, comprehension, and interpersonal skills.
